Robert W. McChesney is a Research Professor in communications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 2002 McChesney co-founded the Illinois Initiative on Global Information and Communications Policy. Also in 2002 he co-founded Free Press and the Free Press Action Fund. Free Press is a national, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that is the largest media reform organization in the United States. Bob McChesney also hosts a weekly radio talk show and, with John Nichols, wrote "The Death and Life of American Journalism: The Media Revolution That Will Begin the World Again." We discuss the precarious state of journalism in America, the historical tradition of public support for media in this country, and what might lie ahead and how we can make it better.
